How to Calculate Business Days Between Dates

A business day typically refers to any day when normal business operations are conducted. In most countries, this is Monday through Friday, excluding Saturday and Sunday. In many cases, business days also exclude public holidays.

It’s important to note that the definition can vary depending on the company, industry, and region, with some businesses operating on weekends or observing different holidays.

You can calculate the number of business days between dates in a few steps.

Step One: Calculating Basic Difference

The first step is to calculate the total number of days between the two dates without considering weekends or holidays. You can do this using a date range calculator, spreadsheet software, or by manually counting the days on a calendar.

Using a spreadsheet in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel, you can use the DAYS function, which allows you to calculate the date range in days. To use the function, enter the following formula in an open cell:

DAYS(end_date, start_date)

Step Two: Subtract Weekends

After you count the total number of days, the next step is to calculate the number of weekends within this period. A weekend typically comprises Saturday and Sunday, and you can calculate how many of them are in your date range by doing the following:

  1. Divide the total number of days by 7 to find how many full weeks are in the period.
  2. Multiply the number of weeks by 2 to get the total weekend days (assuming a two-day weekend).
  3. For periods not encompassing a full week, you may need to manually count any remaining weekend days using a calendar.

Step Three: Account for Holidays

Accounting for holidays requires a more customized approach since holidays can vary by country, region, and even within industries or companies. To accurately subtract holidays:

  1. Compile a list of official public holidays that fall within your date range (see our list of U.S. holidays below).
  2. Consider any company-specific holidays that may not be public but are observed within your organization.
  3. Subtract the number of holidays from your total, ensuring not to double-count holidays that fall on weekends unless your calculation method requires adjusting for this.
